A related question: Is anyone aware of Google (or another search major) having sought legal action against an SEO firm or anyone else illegally acquiring search data?

A lawyer friend of mine thinks it would be "an interesting case" if Google ever sought damages arising from violation of their Terms of Service.

I found this article very evocative. I too have had my reservations being "taught" and pitched SEO programs and tactics that were meant to "slightly scam" google and other search engines or sites.

Not to mention the fact that I am out there competing with companies that out and out lie about what they accomplish for ranking and results. It does make it hard not to want to be an online criminal.

Still I do believe the power of the internet is in your ability to communicate better. so perhaps successful SEO for business will eventually become about relevance instead of the newest "search program
